PUMA Honors Alexander Calder’s Legendary Art Car in New Capsule Collection
For the latest installment of the brand’s iconic partnership with BMW M Motorsport.
Following the release of its capsule collection celebrating Roy Lichtenstein’s BMW Art Car, PUMA now taps Alexander Calder’s special edition BMW 3.0 CSL, crafting a streetwear range inspired by the automotive’s bold forms and palette of primary tones.
The new fashion series, launched last year in collaboration with BMW M Motorsport, continues to blend the worlds of art and car engineering through the famed Art Car concept. The likes of Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and most recently Julie Mehretu provided the dedicated artworks for BMW’s race cars in the respective project, but it was the first ever Art Car, designed by sculptor Alexander Calder, that became a cornerstone of these colliding worlds, proving that racing can be as vibrant as it is thrilling.
In the new arrival, PUMA takes the artist’s statement design debuted at Le Mans in 1975 and reinterprets it in an array of shorts, shirts, T-shirts, caps, and a pair of sneakers. The matching set – consisting of a bowling shirt and loose shorts – features Calder’s print of red, blue and yellow color-blocking configured in a like-for-like form. On either side of the pieces, the ‘93 car number is also worked into the print.
Meanwhile, the T-shirts in the capsule share a less literal interpretation of the Art Car, as the crisp white material comes printed with an illustration of the vehicle and various branded elements. Rounding off the capsule, the brand reworks its most iconic silhouette, the PUMA Suede, engulfing the exterior with the vibrant red tone and swapping the Formstrip for a yellow-tinted panel featuring the ‘93 motif.
