HB: Hi Warren, what’s currently on your focus these days?
Warren Hue (WH): Really, I mean right now just being here in Bali is really nice. Been making music a lot, often too. Yeah. So I’ve been very focused on, you know, my sound. We’ll see how it turns out. Never, this is my first time in Bali.
HB: Are you planning on making music in Bali?
WH: I already did actually a little bit. Yeah, I brought my homemade setup. My Apollo and my mic, and laptop. I brought it here. It’s really nice. When there’s a tropical place, I always tend to bring my recording equipment and stuff. It puts me in a meditative spot. So yeah, you know, I only make it when I’m feeling super inspired.
HB: As we gather here for the G-SHOCK 40th Anniversary event, could you share any thoughts on the brand’s impact on fashion and culture over the years?
WH: It’s just, you know, it’s crazy that it’s been around for 40 years. I feel that’s already a statement in itself. I feel for a brand to last even that long. Um, yeah, it’s just, it’s, it’s a crazy feeling for sure. I mean, growing up, I saw a lot of people wear G-SHOCK as well. So, you know, it has an impact on a lot of people that surround me even when I was growing up.
So it’s kind of cool. Yeah. This is the one given to me is the Brian Collab G-SHOCK. So yeah, he showed it to me before I came here. So I already knew what was going to be like. And I’m, you know, I’m happy to have it.
HB: Do you have any memorable personal experiences or stories related to G-SHOCK watches that have left an impression on you?
WH: I think my first ever watch was a G-SHOCK, you know, just having it around. I can wear, you know, like my dad’s watches at that time or like my mom’s watches at that time. So I was just, you know, I had a black G-SHOCK, I think growing up and I just wore it to school.
G-SHOCK is renowned for its toughness. What does the concept of “toughness” mean to you on a personal level, and how does it connect to your artistry and life experiences?
WH: I think being tough is very… you know, essential as an artist. More so just getting grounded. I think that’s how I remain tough, especially through my art. You know, just standing on what I believe is very important to me. So, it’s just finding that way and finding your sound and finding that balance.
And just holding to yourself, like don’t think about anyone else. Just stay focused. Even though you have a lot of things in your head, you can’t share. You know, that’s where the music comes to mind for me. I just say it in the music and I feel like you can hear those moments a lot.
How do you describe your Instagram explore page?
WH: I feel it’s super definitely catered to fashion. It’s very fashion based, very, I see a lot of screenshots of movies and stuff, which has inspired me to watch some of the OG movies. A bunch of Japanese stuff, architecture, fashion. Yeah, just like all that stuff. As far as Indonesian memes, I’m not super focused on them. I wish I saw more, but I didn’t.
I think I hate gum, @ihategum is pretty fire. I’m chewing gum right now. @ihategum is a very aesthetic page for fashion. Just random clips of old rap videos that I get inspired by. And yeah, that’s because I attached myself so, you know, personally with that. Because I want to like sort of self-reflect and see how I can get inspired by things like that. So that’s a very inspiring page.
Are you currently working on any projects that you can tell us about?
WH: Yeah, well, I’m working on a very special project. I have to say. not necessarily music only, but just like everything that I can put out. Artistically, so I can’t give too much away, but it’s a new version. Reinventing myself a little bit. So I’m excited for the near future. Absolutely.
