BAO Releases First Summer Zine 'The Aircon is Broken'
A nostalgic journey through Asian summers.
One half of BAO, Erchen Chang is launching The Aircon is Broken, a digital zine exploring memories of growing up in Asia during hot summers. This quirky booklet features essays and recipes, contributed by friends and collaborators from different spheres. From fashion designer Rejina Pyo to food writer, Angela Hui, these contributions come in the form of nostalgic stories and heat-combating remedies. Some recipes will also appear on the BAO Noodle Shop menus in Shoreditch and Battersea throughout the summer.
The zine is visually striking, showcasing evocative photography complemented by Chinese calligraphy, adding artistic and cultural depth to a lo-fi aesthetic. Contributors share diverse experiences, from pre-air conditioning Seoul to humid Hong Kong, alongside cooling recipes like chilled cucumber soup and sweet tofu pudding. Chang hopes this project will become a tradition, offering insights into their creative process and inspirations.
The Aircon is Broken is now available for download via BAO’s social media channels.
